Sandy Forsyth answering personal training questions at Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh

01 · Getting started

Before you start

Do I need to be fit before starting personal training?+

No. Most clients start feeling unsure, especially if it has been a while since they trained. Coaching is tailored to your current ability and progressed at a pace that feels safe, supportive and achievable. You do not need any gym experience.

I am new to the gym. Is personal training suitable for beginners?+

Absolutely. Many clients start personal training feeling nervous in the gym. The focus is on building confidence, learning proper technique and creating consistency rather than pushing you too hard.

What happens in the free consultation?+

Your free consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure chat over a coffee at Meadowbank Sports Centre. We talk through your goals, training history and lifestyle, map out what success could look like, and decide together if Forsyth Fitness is the right fit. No commitment required.

What should I wear or bring to my first session?+

Comfortable gym clothing, trainers and a water bottle. Everything else is explained as we go, and I will guide you through each exercise step by step.

How do I get started?+

Book a free consultation. From there we decide together whether personal training is right for you and what the best next step looks like.

02 · Sessions and programming

How training works

How long are personal training sessions?+

55 minutes. Enough for a proper warm-up, a focused main training block and a technique review or cooldown at the end. Every minute is used on purpose.

How often should I train?+

Most clients train once or twice a week, depending on their goals, schedule and experience. In your consultation we will agree what frequency makes sense and build a plan that fits around real life.

What if I can’t make a session?+

Life happens. Sessions can be rescheduled with reasonable notice, and your programme is flexible enough to adapt around busy periods without losing momentum.

Can I train with an injury or health condition?+

In most cases, yes. A full movement assessment is completed before any programme is built, and training is designed around your limitations. Clients with back problems, knee issues and post-surgery recovery have all trained successfully here.

Do you train both men and women?+

Yes. Roughly half of my clients are women. There are no generic male or female programmes. Everything is built around you, whatever your gender, age or starting point.

I have tried personal training before. How is this different?+

Many clients come to me after programmes that promised results but did not last. Coaching here is built around understanding you, not handing over a generic plan. Sessions adapt as life changes, nutrition fits around real food and social life, and the focus is progress that lasts, not six weeks of intensity that burns out.

03 · Pricing and packages

Cost and commitment

How much does a personal trainer cost in Edinburgh?+

Packages start from £220 a month for one session a week (£55 a session). Most clients choose two sessions a week at £420 a month (£52.50 a session), as that builds the consistency behind real strength and fat loss. For a full breakdown, read the Edinburgh personal training guide.

How much does online coaching cost?+

The FF Method is £150 a month, which works out at £37.50 a week. That covers your training plan, flexible nutrition, daily habit tracking, a weekly one-to-one video check-in and direct messaging with me in the app. See the FF Method for the full picture.

Are there any long-term contracts?+

No. There are no long-term contracts and no joining fees. Packages are monthly and you can stop at any time with four weeks’ notice.

Do I need a gym membership?+

No. All sessions take place at Meadowbank Sports Centre and you can train there without an Edinburgh Leisure membership. Just book your sessions and turn up.

04 · Nutrition and results

Food and results

Do you provide nutrition guidance?+

Yes. Nutrition guidance is practical, evidence-based and built around real life. No extreme diets or rigid rules, and no giving up the food you enjoy.

How quickly will I see results?+

Most clients notice more energy within the first two to three weeks. Visible changes usually become clear between weeks six and twelve, depending on consistency, starting point and goals. See real examples on the success stories page.

05 · Location and facilities

Where you’ll train

Where exactly is Forsyth Fitness based?+

Meadowbank Sports Centre on London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE, part of the Edinburgh Leisure network. It is easy to reach from Leith, Portobello, Musselburgh, Dalkeith and across Edinburgh.

Is there parking at Meadowbank Sports Centre?+

Yes, free on-site parking. It makes getting to sessions easy, especially if you are balancing work and family.

What equipment is available at Meadowbank?+

Modern strength and conditioning equipment, a spacious free-weights floor and cardio facilities. It is one of Edinburgh’s best-equipped gyms. More on the Meadowbank page.

06 · Boxing personal training

Boxing PT

Do I need any boxing experience?+

None at all. Most clients who start boxing personal training have never put on a pair of gloves. Stance, footwork and basic combinations are taught from scratch, at a pace that suits you.

Is there any sparring or contact?+

No. Sessions are pads, technique and fitness only. No sparring, no contact and no pressure to do anything you are not comfortable with. It is boxing for fitness and confidence, not fighting.

Is boxing good for weight loss and fitness?+

Yes. It combines conditioning, strength, coordination and skill in a way that never feels repetitive. Most clients enjoy it far more than traditional cardio, so they stay consistent and get better results.

Can I combine boxing with regular personal training?+

Yes, and many clients do. Boxing works well alongside structured strength sessions, adding variety, conditioning and skill.

Do I need my own boxing gloves?+

You can borrow gloves for your first session, so there is nothing to buy before you start. If you carry on, your own pair is recommended for hygiene, and Sandy can advise on what to buy.

07 · Online coaching

The FF Method

How does online coaching work?+

Your training plan, flexible nutrition and habits live in the app, with a weekly one-to-one video check-in to review progress and adjust your plan. Between check-ins you can message me directly through the app. See the FF Method for the full picture.

Do I need a gym for online coaching?+

No. Your programme is built around whatever you have, whether that is a home setup with minimal kit, a commercial gym, or both.

How is the FF Method different from a fitness app?+

Apps give you content. The FF Method gives you coaching. Your programme is built for you, adjusted regularly based on your progress, and backed by a coach who is there throughout.

Can I combine online coaching with in-person sessions?+

Yes. Many clients mix online coaching with occasional sessions at Meadowbank, and your programme can be built to work with both.
